Nainital: In a bid to tackle traffic congestion and pollution, the Nainital Municipal Council has approved a proposal to impose eco tax on private vehicles entering the city. This tax will be utilized for environmental conservation and traffic management in the region.
Why the Eco Tax?
Nainital, known as the “City of Lakes,” attracts millions of tourists every year, leading to severe traffic jams and increased pollution. To address this, the local administration has decided to introduce an eco tax, similar to the system in Mussoorie. Once legally approved, all private vehicles entering Nainital will be required to pay this tax.
Areas Covered Under the Tax
Until now, toll tax was collected only from vehicles entering through Tallital, but under the new system, the eco tax will also apply to vehicles coming from Bhowali and Kaladhungi. This move aims to reduce overcrowding, manage parking issues, and limit environmental damage caused by excessive vehicle emissions.
Implementation & Benefits
- The eco tax revenue will be used for environmental improvement initiatives.
- It will help regulate the influx of private vehicles during peak tourist seasons.
- The tax collection will increase municipal revenue, aiding in better urban management.
Once the legal review is completed, the eco tax policy will be formally implemented, requiring tourists visiting Nainital with private vehicles to contribute towards sustainable tourism.
