Lucknow: The Mahakumbh 2025 may have concluded, but political debates surrounding it continue. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday targeted West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for calling the event “Mrityu Kumbh” (Death Kumbh).

Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected members of the Gorakhpur Journalists’ Press Club, CM Yogi remarked, “Those who failed to control unrest during Holi had the audacity to call the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj a ‘Mrityu Kumbh.’ This time, for the first time, people from Tamil Nadu and Kerala participated in Mahakumbh.”

He also compared law and order situations in UP and West Bengal, stating, “Uttar Pradesh, with a population of around 25 crore, witnessed a peaceful Holi, whereas West Bengal saw disturbances in multiple places.”

Mamata’s “Mrityu Kumbh” Remark

On February 18, Mamata Banerjee had criticized the BJP-led government over stampede incidents at the Mahakumbh, alleging that the event turned into a “Mrityu Kumbh.” She also accused officials of hiding the actual death toll and claimed that hundreds of bodies were concealed to downplay the tragedy.

In her speech in the West Bengal Assembly, Mamata stated, “The BJP government has turned Mahakumbh into Mrityu Kumbh by suppressing the real number of deaths.”
