Pune: Pune Rural Police have announced comprehensive plans for the 207th Bhima-Koregaon Anniversary celebrations, scheduled for January 1, 2024.
Pune Rural SP Pankaj Deshmukh shared details about the security measures and facilities in place, including ample parking for attendees. He urged visitors to maintain peace during the event.
“For the upcoming Bhima-Koregaon Anniversary celebrations, Pune Rural Police are fully prepared, and the district administration is also on alert. We have arranged extensive parking areas for the convenience of visitors. I welcome everyone to the celebration and appeal to them to uphold peace,” Deshmukh stated.
Each year, Koregaon Bhima village attracts thousands of people who gather to mark the anniversary of the historic battle that took place on January 1, 1818. This conflict, between the British East India Company and the Peshwa Marathas, was a pivotal event in India’s resistance to colonial rule.
People from various communities come to pay homage to the soldiers who fought in this significant battle. However, the 200th anniversary in 2018 saw violent clashes, resulting in one death and several injuries. The police took action by filing 58 cases against 162 individuals involved in the violence.
The unrest started when individuals, reportedly with saffron flags, pelted stones at vehicles heading to Perne village along the Pune-Ahmednagar Road during the 200th commemoration of the Bhima-Koregaon battle.
