New Delhi, October 23, 2024—Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the filing of her nomination for the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-poll as a “moment filled with emotion.” Accompanied by top party leaders, she expressed her commitment to the progress of Wayanad.
On her social media, Priyanka shared, “The love you’ve shown to Rahul Ji, and now to me, is something I carry with me every step of the way. Wayanad’s strength lies in its people—their kindness, resilience, and belief in a better future.” She promised to listen to the community and address their concerns, thanking supporters and party workers for their backing.
Congress leaders voiced confidence in Priyanka’s chances of winning. Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that her candidacy would greatly benefit the party, while Kerala Congress chief K Sudhakaran predicted a significant victory margin.
Congress leader VD Satheesan asserted that the BJP would fall to third place, projecting a larger vote margin than what Rahul Gandhi received in 2019. K Suresh, another Congress MP, noted that there has been a strong demand from Wayanad residents for Priyanka to contest since Rahul vacated the seat.
Congress MP Jebi Mather emphasized the importance of Priyanka’s presence in Parliament, suggesting that her victory would be a pivotal moment in Indian politics. He criticized the BJP for its nervousness regarding her candidacy.
Rahul Gandhi praised his sister, highlighting her selflessness and dedication to family, urging Wayanad voters to support her. He assured constituents that she would be their voice in Parliament.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh, however, criticized the Congress, accusing it of being a dynastic party disconnected from democratic values.
Priyanka filed her nomination at the district collector’s office in Kalpetta, following a roadshow with Rahul in the town, where she thanked the people for their support during challenging times for her brother.
The Wayanad by-poll is set for November 13, with vote counting scheduled for November 23. Priyanka faces competition from BJP’s Navya Haridas and Left Democratic Front candidate Sathyan Mokeri. If elected, she would become the third member of the Gandhi family to serve in Parliament.
