Patna: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Yadav on Saturday paid homage to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, stating that the country will never see a leader like him again. When asked about calls for a memorial, he responded, “He should get it.”
Recalling his association with Singh, Lalu said, “The country will never get a politician like Dr. Manmohan Singh. I was a part of his Council of Ministers and shared a close bond with him.”
Preparations for Singh’s funeral are underway at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi, with the last rites scheduled for 11:45 am today. His wife Gursharan Kaur, daughter Daman Singh, and key leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Mallikarjun Kharge paid their respects at the AICC headquarters.
Crowds gathered outside Singh’s Delhi residence to pay tribute. A local, Jasmeet, said Singh’s efforts brought global fame to India.
Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory regarding route restrictions and urged public transport use during the funeral.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge requested Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah to hold Singh’s funeral at a site suitable for a memorial. The government later confirmed that space for a memorial would be allocated after necessary formalities.
Manmohan Singh, hailed as the architect of India’s economic reforms, served as Finance Minister (1991-1996) and as Prime Minister (2004-2014). His tenure saw transformative economic policies and global recognition. Singh retired in 2014, leaving behind an enduring legacy of growth and leadership.
