New Delhi: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi expressed his support for the Supreme Court’s decision affirming the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, which was enacted following the Assam Accord in 1985. In a post on X, Gogoi highlighted the Accord as a historic agreement that restored peace to Assam after years of political unrest.
“I respect the decision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court to back the Assam Accord,” Gogoi stated, noting the importance of dialogue during that period, particularly the engagement of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi with student leaders despite differing political views.
Gogoi contrasted this historical approach with the current political climate, criticizing the BJP for labeling protestors as anti-nationals and for the perceived negligence towards states like Manipur. His comments followed the Supreme Court’s ruling, which upheld the provision that denies Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi immigrants who entered the country before March 1971.
