Dehradun, February 11, 2025 – Uttarakhand’s theater and entertainment industry suffered a major loss today with the passing of renowned comedian and folk artist Ghanna Bhai (Ghananand). The veteran artist breathed his last at a private hospital in Dehradun after a prolonged illness.
Born in 1953 in Gagod village, Pauri district, Ghanna Bhai had a deep-rooted connection with Uttarakhand’s cultural scene. He received his early education at Cantonment Board School, Lansdowne, and began his artistic journey in the 1970s by performing in Ramleela plays. His impeccable comic timing and relatable performances soon made him a household name in the region. By 1974, he had expanded his reach to radio and later to Doordarshan, where he gained immense popularity.
According to reports, Ghanna Bhai had been facing health issues for some time. A few days ago, he experienced complications due to blood in his urine and was admitted to the hospital for routine check-ups. However, his condition deteriorated after a blood transfusion, and he was placed on a ventilator in the critical care unit. Despite the doctors’ efforts, he passed away today.
Apart from his contributions to theater and television, Ghanna Bhai also acted in several Garhwali films and music albums, further cementing his legacy in regional entertainment. His influence extended beyond the arts, as he ventured into politics in 2012 by contesting the Uttarakhand Assembly elections from Pauri on a BJP ticket, though he was unsuccessful. He later sought a party ticket again in the 2022 elections.
His demise has left a void in Uttarakhand’s cultural sphere, with admirers mourning the loss of a beloved artist whose humor and storytelling resonated with audiences across generations.
