Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the National Games at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, drew a parallel between the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the unifying spirit of sports. He praised the Uttarakhand government for implementing the UCC, calling it a “historic step” toward equality and non-discrimination.
“Just like sports, the UCC embodies a team spirit that discriminates against no one,” Modi said. He emphasized that the essence of sports lies in collective effort, which is the key to every victory and medal. “The UCC reflects the same spirit of unity and fairness,” he added.
Modi also referred to the UCC as the “secular civil code,” highlighting its role in strengthening democracy and upholding the Constitution. “The UCC will lay the foundation for a dignified life for our mothers and daughters. It will empower society and protect personal rights,” he stated.
Uttarakhand made history on Monday by becoming the first state in independent India to implement the UCC. The code prioritizes the protection of personal rights and regulates laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships, among other aspects.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when the UCC is being widely discussed as a step toward ensuring equality and justice for all citizens, regardless of their religious or cultural backgrounds.
