Amritsar, February 5, 2025: A US Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft carrying 104 Indian nationals, deported under the United States’ revised immigration policy, landed at the Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar on Wednesday. Among those aboard, 30 individuals were from Punjab, with the rest coming from Haryana, Gujarat, and other parts of India.
The deportees, including women and children, received medical care and food assistance upon arrival due to the exhausting nature of their journey. After disembarking, the individuals from Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh were sent back home by road, while the remaining passengers, primarily from Gujarat, were flown to their respective destinations.
Local police from the deportees’ home regions were present at the airport to take custody of the individuals. They may conduct basic inquiries to ensure no serious criminal activity is involved before handing them over to their families.
Among the five deportees from Amritsar, three had recently arrived in the US. One of them, Akashdeep Singh from Rajatal, had been out of touch with his family for 15 days. His father, who had spent Rs 60 lakh to send him to the US, expressed relief upon hearing of his safe return.
One of the deported women, Sukhjit Kaur, was sent back despite having a father residing in Italy. She, along with others, was deported as part of the US government’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.
