Airtel's New Spam Detection Center Identifies 54 Million Spam Calls in Odisha

Bhubaneswar:  Bharti Airtel’s newly launched AI-powered spam detection system has successfully identified 54 million potential spam calls and 2 million spam SMS messages in Odisha over the past 20 days.

Balaji Singh, Chief Operating Officer of Bharti Airtel in Odisha, announced the results at a press conference on Thursday, highlighting the relief this technology has brought to customers. He noted that all Airtel mobile users in the state now have automatic access to this free service, eliminating the need for downloads or requests.

“As connectivity grows, customers face increasing threats from scams and fraudulent communications,” Singh said. “To address these digital challenges, Airtel is introducing an advanced AI-driven solution that proactively detects suspected spam calls and messages.” This initiative aims to enhance safety for Airtel’s 19.2 million customers and foster a more secure communication environment.

Developed in-house by Airtel’s data scientists, the AI system utilizes a proprietary algorithm to identify and classify calls and SMS as “Suspected Spam.” It analyzes parameters like caller usage patterns, call frequency, and duration in real time, cross-referencing this data with known spam patterns for accurate flagging.

The dual-layered protection features filters at both the network and IT systems levels, processing 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls in just two milliseconds—effectively managing one trillion records in real time with AI.

Additionally, the system alerts customers about malicious links in SMS messages, scanning every message against a centralized database of blacklisted URLs. Singh also pointed out that the system can detect anomalies, such as frequent IMEI changes, which often indicate fraudulent activity. By implementing these measures, Airtel is committed to providing robust protection against the evolving threats of spam and fraud.
