New Delhi, February 9, 2025 – Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has resigned from his post, a move the Congress has termed “belated.” The opposition party stated that the people of Manipur are now awaiting a visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom they criticized for not addressing the state’s crisis in the past 20 months.
Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal, shortly after returning from Delhi. His decision came ahead of a no-confidence motion that the Congress planned to introduce in the Manipur Assembly.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress’ General Secretary in charge of communications, took to social media to comment on Singh’s resignation. “This was a demand we have been making since early May 2023 when Manipur erupted. The resignation is long overdue,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Modi has still not visited the state despite the prolonged unrest.
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also weighed in, saying that Singh’s resignation is the result of “mounting public pressure, the Supreme Court investigation, and the no-confidence motion by the Congress.” Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of fostering division in Manipur and criticized Modi for allowing Singh to continue in office despite ongoing violence and unrest.
Singh had held a crucial meeting with BJP-led alliance MLAs at the Secretariat on Saturday, just before submitting his resignation. His departure marks a significant political shift in Manipur, with further developments expected as the state navigates its leadership transition.
