Mumbai: In a strategic move ahead of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Congress party has released its fourth list of candidates, announcing 14 nominees. Notably, the party has altered its candidate for the Andheri West constituency, replacing Sachin Sawant with Ashok Jadhav.

The announcement comes as part of the Congress’s broader strategy to bolster its position in the upcoming elections scheduled for November 20, with results expected on November 23. The decision to change the candidate for Andheri West appears to stem from internal discussions within the party. Sachin Sawant, who initially held the ticket, requested a reconsideration of his candidacy, citing dissatisfaction among local party leaders regarding his nomination. Sawant had initially expressed a preference for the Bandra East seat, which was allocated to their alliance partner, Shiv Sena (UBT). In response to these concerns, the party opted for Ashok Jadhav as their new candidate for Andheri West.

This change adds to the political dynamics of the constituency, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has re-nominated incumbent MLA Amit Satam. The upcoming electoral battle in Andheri West is expected to be closely contested, reflecting broader shifts within the Maharashtra political landscape.

Earlier this week, Congress released its third list of candidates, featuring 16 nominees, including former Maharashtra Congress president Manikrao Thakre for the Deglur seat. Other significant nominations included Rana Sanada from Khamgaon, Hemant Chimote from Melghat, and Monohar Poreti from Gadchiroli, among others. The party has thus far announced a total of 48 candidates in its first list and 23 in the second, indicating a calculated approach to candidate selection as it navigates alliances and electoral strategies.

However, tensions within the party have surfaced regarding seat-sharing arrangements. Reports indicate that former Congress president Rahul Gandhi has expressed dissatisfaction over the allocation of key constituencies to alliance partners within the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, particularly regarding the distribution of seats to Shiv Sena. During a recent meeting of the Congress Central Election Committee in Delhi, Gandhi reportedly left the discussion in frustration over these matters, highlighting internal conflicts that could impact the party’s electoral strategy.

With the Congress working to solidify its electoral base, the party’s leadership is focused on presenting a united front and addressing grievances among its candidates and local leaders. The changing dynamics within the party and its alliances may play a crucial role in the upcoming elections, as it seeks to regain lost ground in Maharashtra politics.

As the electoral battle heats up, the Congress party aims to leverage its extensive grassroots network and its commitment to addressing local issues. With a history of serving the state’s diverse communities, Congress hopes to resonate with voters by highlighting its initiatives and the importance of stability and governance.
