SRINAGAR, Feb 3 – Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced today that commercial train operations to Kashmir will commence soon, marking a significant milestone in the region’s connectivity. He also confirmed that Jammu and Kashmir’s railway network is now fully electrified.
Speaking at a press conference from Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, Vaishnaw stated that all necessary tests for the Katra-Srinagar railway line have been successfully completed, paving the way for its launch. He highlighted the ongoing redevelopment of Jammu Railway Station, which, once finished, will ensure direct railway connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar.
The Minister provided key updates on railway infrastructure projects in J&K, including provisions in the Union Budget 2025. A budget of ₹844 crore has been allocated to further enhance railway connectivity and development in the region.
J&K Railway Electrification and Expansion
Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing railway infrastructure, noting that since 2014, 344 km of railway tracks have been electrified, making J&K’s railway network 100% electrified. Additionally, 135 km of new railway tracks have been laid, significantly improving accessibility and regional connectivity.
Addressing concerns about passengers needing to switch trains for onward travel to Srinagar, he explained that the variation in terrain and climatic conditions requires adjustments, but future redevelopment plans aim to streamline travel.
Major Railway Station Upgrades
The government is also upgrading key railway stations in J&K under the ‘Amrit Stations’ project. The Budgam, Jammu Tawi, Katra, and Udhampur stations are being modernized with improved passenger facilities at a total cost of ₹292.5 crore.
Vaishnaw reiterated that the enhanced railway infrastructure will not only improve connectivity but also contribute to economic growth in the region by boosting trade, tourism, and local development.
With these initiatives, the long-awaited railway link between Jammu and Srinagar is now closer to reality, promising a smoother, faster, and more reliable travel experience for passengers.
