New Delhi: October 23, 2024—Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his first visit to the national capital since taking office last week. The meeting comes in the wake of a tragic terrorist attack in Ganderbal district that resulted in the deaths of seven individuals.
The Home Minister’s office shared details of the meeting on social media, emphasizing its significance amid ongoing security concerns in the region.
Following the recent attack, which claimed the lives of a doctor and six construction workers on October 20, Abdullah underscored the necessity for heightened vigilance among security forces and police. “The administration, especially the police and security forces, will have to maintain their alert level even more and ensure that such attacks do not take place,” he stated.
The attack occurred at a tunnel construction site on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, where the assailants targeted laborers returning to their camp. This incident raised alarm due to its nature as a targeted killing.
Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on October 16, after resigning from the Budgam assembly constituency while retaining his seat in Ganderbal, a stronghold for the National Conference (NC). He previously served as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2015.
The discussions with Amit Shah are expected to focus on enhancing security measures in the region and addressing the challenges faced by the local administration in maintaining peace and stability.
