Kulgam, February 3, 2025 – In a tragic incident marking the first civilian killing of the year in Kashmir, terrorists shot dead a retired Territorial Army soldier and injured his wife and 13-year-old niece in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday.
Officials reported that two armed terrorists arrived at the residence of Manzoor Ahmad Wagay in Beehi Bagh, located about 10 kilometers from the district headquarters, and opened fire on his family.
According to preliminary investigations, Wagay sustained multiple gunshot wounds while trying to shield his niece. The attackers, suspected to be affiliated with the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, ambushed Wagay as he returned home. The three victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Wagay succumbed to his injuries, while his wife and niece remain in stable condition.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down the perpetrators.
Possible Retaliation for Recent Militant Losses
The attack comes just over a month after security forces eliminated five terrorists in an encounter in Kadder, Beehi Bagh. Among those killed was Farooq Ahmed Bhat, a self-styled commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, which left the militant outfit significantly weakened in South Kashmir. Officials suspect Monday’s attack could be an act of retaliation.
Condemnation from Political Leaders
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the bereaved family.
“I strongly condemn this heinous terrorist act. The perpetrators will not be spared. I have directed authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the injured and ensure swift justice,” he stated.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also denounced the attack, calling it a “barbaric and senseless act of violence.” He extended condolences to Wagay’s family and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying she was “terribly saddened” by Wagay’s killing.
Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari labeled the attack as cowardly, emphasizing his faith in security agencies to “bring the culprits to justice swiftly.”
Veteran CPM leader and Kulgam MLA M.Y. Tarigami also condemned the incident, urging authorities to ensure the best medical treatment for the survivors.
Ongoing Investigation and Security Measures
Officials confirmed that security forces have intensified their search for the attackers. Additional troops have been deployed to monitor the area, while intelligence agencies are working to trace potential links to the previous encounters.
This incident has raised fresh concerns over targeted attacks against civilians and former security personnel in Kashmir. Authorities have urged vigilance and assured strict action against those responsible.
