Jhajjar, February 4, 2025 – In a historic decision, a panchayat in Jhajjar district has overturned a century-old social custom that prohibited marriages between Gwalison village and five Beri subdivision villages—Paharipur, Malikpur, Safipur, Godhadi, and Aachhej.
Key Highlights:
- The decision was unanimously passed at a panchayat held in Paharipur village on Sunday.
- Rajender Singh Solanki, sarpanch of Aachhej village, presided over the gathering.
- The restriction was based on an old tradition where residents of the five villages considered Gwalison villagers as brothers due to their historic hospitality and travel connections.
Why the Change?
- Gotra Rules Maintained: Since all six villages belong to different gotras (sub-castes), there is no religious or traditional restriction on marriage.
- No Logical Reason to Continue the Ban: Yudhvir Dhankar, a senior leader of the Dhankar Khap, led the push for the change, emphasizing that Gwalison is not an adjoining village to the other five, making the restriction unnecessary.
Impact of the Decision
This move breaks a long-standing societal norm and paves the way for inter-village matrimonial alliances, strengthening ties while preserving cultural traditions. It reflects a modernizing shift in rural Haryana, where social customs are being re-evaluated in light of logic and inclusivity.
