International Pavilion Becomes Major Tourist Attraction at Surajkund International Craft Mela

Chandigarh, February 10 — The 38th Surajkund International Craft Mela, a prestigious event that celebrates the rich heritage of art, culture, and craftsmanship, is drawing large crowds with its vibrant display of crafts from across India and abroad. This year, the theme states Odisha and Madhya Pradesh are adding to the cultural diversity of the Mela, while the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Pavilion has emerged as a major attraction, captivating visitors from across the world.

Located behind the Chaupal area, the International Pavilion is undoubtedly one of the major highlights of the 2025 edition of the Craft Mela. The Pavilion showcases the rich cultural diversity of the BIMSTEC member countries, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Ghana, and Afghanistan. In addition to these countries, around 51 other nations are participating, with over 30 international stalls that offer a unique window into their traditional crafts and cultural heritage. The Pavilion has become a focal point for international tourists who are drawn to the vibrant displays of craftsmanship from these participating nations.

The BIMSTEC Pavilion has received considerable attention for its unique mix of cultural displays and artistry. International visitors are particularly captivated by the range of handcrafted products on display, each stall representing the history and artistry of its respective country.

One of the most popular stalls in the Pavilion, FC-43, features Tunisian artisans showcasing their exceptional skills in olive wood carving. The Tunisian craftsmen at this stall are displaying an array of beautifully crafted items, including swings, coffee and tea sets, chairs, flower pots, clocks, and corner stools, all made from the highly durable and richly textured olive wood. Each piece takes anywhere from two to four days to complete, with the intricate carvings and delicate craftsmanship drawing large crowds. Visitors are eager to admire the artistry and many are purchasing these handcrafted items as a unique souvenir of their visit.

The inclusion of international stalls at the Surajkund Mela provides not only a platform for global artisans to display their work but also enriches the cultural experience for visitors.
