New Delhi: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is advancing the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat, under the Sagarmala programme. This world-class facility aims to highlight India’s maritime heritage, spanning from ancient times to the modern era, through an engaging edutainment approach utilizing cutting-edge technology.
On August 23, 2024, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal chaired a project progress review meeting at the Mumbai Port Office. Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Defence (including the Navy and Coast Guard), and the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra, along with Prasar Bharati and architect Hafeez Contractor.

He also stressed the need to align the project with regional sentiments, ensuring it respects the cultural and historical significance of the area.
Expected to feature a wide range of exhibits, interactive displays, and educational programs, the NMHC aims to attract international tourists and foster a deeper appreciation for India’s maritime legacy. Currently, the physical progress for Phase 1A of the project stands at 57%, marking a significant milestone in its development.
