The Election Commission (EC) has demanded factual evidence from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal to support his allegations that the Yamuna river water flowing into Delhi is being poisoned by neighbouring Haryana. In a letter addressed to Kejriwal, the EC has given him until 8 pm on Wednesday to provide details on the nature and extent of the chemicals allegedly used in the poisoning, which he claimed could lead to mass casualties.
The EC also reminded Kejriwal of legal provisions that could result in up to three years of imprisonment for making “mischievous” statements that threaten national integration and public harmony. The poll body further asked the Delhi Chief Minister to share specific details about his claim that engineers from the Delhi Jal Board had detected and prevented the poisoning in time.
The allegations have sparked controversy, with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress filing complaints with the Election Commission against Kejriwal. They accused him of making unsubstantiated claims that could disrupt public order.
In a related development, Delhi Minister Atishi raised concerns over rising ammonia levels in the water supplied to Delhi by Haryana, warning that it could severely impact the national capital’s water supply. The EC has also sought a factual report from the Haryana government on the matter.
The issue has gained significant attention amid the ongoing political climate, with the EC emphasizing the need for evidence-based statements to maintain public trust and harmony. Kejriwal’s response to the EC’s notice is awaited as the deadline approaches.
This development underscores the growing tensions between Delhi and Haryana over water supply issues, with environmental and public health concerns taking center stage in the political discourse.
