The Election Commission (EC) has issued a stern directive to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, demanding factual evidence to support his allegation that the Yamuna river is being poisoned by chemicals from Haryana. The EC has given Kejriwal until 8 PM on Wednesday to provide details on the nature and extent of the chemicals allegedly used, which he claims could lead to mass casualties.
In a letter addressed to Kejriwal, the EC emphasized the seriousness of his claims and reminded him of legal provisions that could result in up to three years’ imprisonment for making “mischievous” statements that threaten national integration and public harmony. The poll body also asked Kejriwal to share specific details about his assertion that engineers from the Delhi Jal Board had detected and prevented the poisoning in time.
The controversy stems from Kejriwal’s recent allegations that Haryana is responsible for contaminating the Yamuna river, a claim that has drawn sharp criticism from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. Both parties have lodged complaints with the EC, accusing Kejriwal of making baseless accusations.
Adding to the dispute, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has raised concerns over rising ammonia levels in the water supplied to Delhi by Haryana, warning that it could severely impact the national capital’s water supply.
Meanwhile, the EC is also awaiting a factual report from the Haryana government regarding the allegations. The issue has sparked a heated political debate, with the EC stepping in to ensure that public statements are backed by credible evidence.
As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on Kejriwal to see whether he can substantiate his claims or face potential legal consequences for his allegations. The outcome could have significant implications for the ongoing political discourse surrounding water safety and inter-state relations.
