Announcement Ahead of Elections
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal announced on Saturday that tenants in the city would be provided free electricity and water if his party is re-elected in the upcoming Assembly elections. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Kejriwal stated that a comprehensive plan and system would be developed to extend these benefits to tenants.
Challenges Faced by Tenants
Mr. Kejriwal highlighted that tenants in Delhi currently do not receive the same benefits as homeowners under the government’s free electricity and water schemes. He mentioned that tenants have repeatedly raised this concern, despite appreciating other government initiatives such as access to quality education, mohalla clinics, free bus travel, and subsidized healthcare.
“Wherever I go, tenants tell me they are happy with the facilities provided by the government, but they feel excluded from free electricity and water schemes. We will address this if re-elected,” he said.
Focus on Marginalized Communities
The Chief Minister noted that a large number of tenants in Delhi are migrants from Purvanchal, many of whom live in overcrowded and financially challenging conditions. He said the proposed policy aims to alleviate some of their economic difficulties by including them in these welfare schemes.
Film Screening Issue
During the press conference, Mr. Kejriwal also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of stopping the screening of a film about AAP. He claimed the screening, which was organized for journalists, was halted by the police despite being a private event with no promotional content.
Mr. Kejriwal alleged that the BJP had acted out of fear, as the film showcased how AAP leaders faced challenges posed by their political opponents. He further clarified that private screenings do not require permission from the Election Commission and termed the action unjustified.
