What Did PM Modi and BJP Say About the ‘Sheesh Mahal’?
The controversy unfolded in stages:
- January 3: During an event in Ashok Vihar, PM Modi referenced the ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ stating, “I too could have built a Sheesh Mahal, but my dream was for every citizen to have a proper home.” He further emphasized that he never built a home for himself.
- December 4: The BJP’s Delhi unit released a poster portraying Kejriwal as ‘Delhi’s Raja Babu’ with the caption, “AAP Presents Crores of Sheesh Mahal,” making its first jabs at him over the lavish spending.
- January 5: At a rally in Japanese Park, PM Modi again took a shot at Kejriwal, stating that while Delhi was battling COVID-19, Kejriwal’s focus seemed to be on building a ‘Sheesh Mahal.’
Which House of Kejriwal Is Being Dubbed the ‘Sheesh Mahal’?
The BJP is referring to the Chief Minister’s residence at 6 Flag Staff Road, Delhi, which Kejriwal occupied from 2015 to 2024. The controversy revolves around claims that he spent ₹45 crore on renovations to this official residence.
What Exactly is the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ and How Was ₹45 Crore Spent?
The BJP released a video in December 2024, showing the extravagant interiors of the CM’s residence. They mocked Kejriwal, saying, “He once promised not to take a government house, but instead turned it into a seven-star resort.” Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva demanded Kejriwal explain how ₹45 crore was spent on the renovations, especially during the COVID-19 crisis when public development projects were halted.
Where Did the ₹45 Crore for the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ Come From?
The issue first emerged in May 2023, when Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, ordered a CBI investigation into the renovation expenses. In September 2023, CBI filed a report alleging that Kejriwal had spent ₹45 crore on renovating the CM residence during the COVID period, using government funds.
The total expenditure, according to government reports, was ₹44.78 crore, with ₹11.3 crore allocated solely to interior design and decoration. Payments were made in six installments between September 2020 and June 2022. Three engineers were suspended over the alleged wasteful spending.
How Did Kejriwal Respond to the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ Allegations?
On January 3, Kejriwal fired back at PM Modi’s comments, saying, “The person who built a ₹2,700 crore house, flies in an ₹8,400 crore aircraft, and wears a ₹10 lakh suit should not talk about my Sheesh Mahal.” He also criticized Modi’s government for its handling of the housing crisis, accusing the PM of neglecting the needs of the homeless and the urban poor.
Could the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ Issue Impact Delhi Elections?
Political analysts believe the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ controversy could play a significant role in Delhi’s upcoming elections. Rashid Kidwai argues that Kejriwal’s image as a man of simplicity has been tarnished. Kejriwal, who once promised not to accept government perks, is now facing accusations of luxurious living. This could shift the public’s perception, especially among Kejriwal’s floating voters, who are crucial for the AAP’s success.
Who Lives in the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ Now and Where Is Kejriwal Residing?
Since Kejriwal resigned from his post as CM in October 2024, the CM residence at 6 Flag Staff Road is now occupied by CM Atishi. Kejriwal, on the other hand, is living in a government bungalow owned by AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal at 5, Feroz Shah Road. Kejriwal did not receive a new residence post-resignation, as Delhi does not provide former CMs with official accommodations.
Can a Chief Minister Renovate Their Official Residence at Will?
Experts say that there are no clear rules for renovating a CM’s residence. The responsibility typically lies with the Public Works Department (PWD) or the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) in Delhi. While there are no legal prohibitions, it’s up to the CM to decide on renovations based on their personal preferences and available budget. This flexibility has led to differences in how various state leaders choose to manage their official homes.
Is There Really a ‘Sheesh Mahal’ in India?
In India, the term ‘Sheesh Mahal’ traditionally refers to a palace adorned with glasswork, such as those found in Jaipur and Delhi. While Kejriwal’s residence may have been lavishly renovated, it doesn’t quite match the historical grandeur associated with such palaces.
