Guwahati: Assam BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita expressed strong confidence on Tuesday that the ruling alliance will secure victories in all five Assembly seats where by-elections are scheduled for November 13.
Kalita stated, “Four out of the five Assembly seats involved in the by-elections have legislators from the BJP or our alliance partners. The people have bestowed a heavy mandate upon us in the recent Lok Sabha polls, and these seats became vacant as MLAs were elected to the lower house of Parliament. We are determined to win all five Assembly seats.”
He emphasized that the citizens of Assam are satisfied with the BJP’s governance, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the significant development achieved in the state over the past eight years. “The double-engine government has delivered unprecedented progress, leaving no room for the opposition,” Kalita added.
Despite his optimism, Kalita urged party workers to approach the elections with sincerity and diligence. “Our workers have been engaging with voters, and everyone has been instructed not to become overconfident, but to continue their campaign activities earnestly,” he said.
The vacant Assembly seats—Dholai, Behali, Samaguri, Bongaigaon, and Sidli—were left open after five legislators, including a cabinet minister, were elected to Parliament. This includes two BJP MLAs and one each from alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), along with one from the opposition Congress.
Notably, former cabinet minister Parimal Suklabaidya vacated his Dholai seat after winning the Silchar Lok Sabha seat, while senior BJP leader Ranjit Dutta was elected to the lower house, leaving his Behali seat vacant. The AGP also made a parliamentary comeback after 20 years with Phani Bhusan Choudhury’s election from Barpeta, and UPPL leader Joyanta Basumatary secured the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat.
Congress leader Rakibul Hussain, meanwhile, defeated AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal in the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, further solidifying his status as a five-time legislator from the Samaguri Assembly seat.
Kalita confirmed that the BJP will field candidates in three seats—Dholai, Behali, and Samaguri—while AGP and UPPL are set to contest in Bongaigaon and Sidli, respectively.
