Noida: In response to the rising pollution levels in Delhi-NCR, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 3 has been enforced. Under these new rules, BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles will face restrictions, and all construction activities, including builder projects, road construction, and other infrastructure works, will be completely halted. This will impact nearly 5.5 lakh vehicles in the region.
Key Highlights of GRAP Stage 3:
1. Vehicle Restrictions: BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles will be banned from the roads, aiming to reduce vehicular emissions and help curb pollution.
2. Suspension of Construction Activities: All construction work will be halted, except for critical projects such as airports, hospitals, STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) plants, and elevated road projects. The goal is to reduce dust and other pollutants emitted during construction.
3. School Closures: In Delhi, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) has exceeded 400, primary schools up to class 5 have been closed and shifted to online mode. However, as of now, schools in Noida and Ghaziabad have not been closed, but outdoor activities have been suspended as a precautionary measure.
Cause of Pollution:
According to weather experts, the worsening pollution and smog are primarily due to the sudden drop in temperature following snowfall in the mountains, coupled with slow-moving winds and increased humidity. This has led to a thick layer of fog and pollutants hanging over NCR, severely impacting visibility and air quality.
Outlook:
Experts have warned that pollution levels may worsen in the coming days, and stricter measures might be taken if the situation deteriorates further. While some areas are still experiencing relief, others are grappling with heavy smog and poor air quality.
These steps under GRAP Stage 3 are crucial to improving public health and reducing pollution in NCR. The success of these measures depends on the continued cooperation of citizens, industries, and authorities to manage pollution levels effectively.
