Lucknow: The Yogi government has saved over ₹ 8,000 crore by cracking down on false beneficiaries who illegally took advantage of different social welfare initiatives. The measure has also aided the administration in consolidating its finances.

The government has already identified 79 lakh people who are ineligible for the welfare programs managed by 11 departments that are at the forefront of giving subsidies, incentives, and pensions. To guarantee that legitimate claimants get payments as soon as possible, the union and state governments directly transfer funds into people’ bank accounts. Eleven departments comprise food and civil supplies, women’s welfare, social welfare, medical health and family welfare, fisheries, disability empowerment, labour, and education.

Beneficiaries get benefits from the union government through vocational and skill development, basic education, handloom and textile industries, and urban development.

In addition, 19 additional departments are participating in the process, but because the 11 agencies are at the forefront of providing union government benefits, their data was inspected first, stated a senior officer.

The overall benefits have increased over time, rising from ₹ 29,884 crore in 2019-20 to ₹ 39,215 crore in 2020-21 and ₹ 41,050 crore in 2021-22. Beneficiaries have received these monies under the direct benefit transfer (DBT) system. We’ve also initiated a campaign to pick out fake recipients. Camps are being held in all UP districts under the supervision of senior authorities to review beneficiaries’ documentation. In most cases, families misrepresented their yearly income, and in other cases, the real beneficiary had died. However, their children were receiving benefits. Such entries were eliminated, and a new list was created, the officer explained.

The process resulted in ₹ 8,062 crore in savings and the elimination of 79,08,682 bogus beneficiaries from the DBT list. In UP, around 8.35 crore people were enrolled under different DBT initiatives.

The food and civil supply department discovered the most abnormalities and was obliged to revoke 55.51 lakh ration cards that were being used to get ration packages. Similarly, 2.70 lakh people were defrauding the women’s welfare agency by withdrawing funds under the national widow pension system.
