New Delhi: The Supreme Court on the seeking minority status in nine states of the country for Hindus, asked petitioner Devkinandan Thakur, to present a concrete example in which despite having a small population in a particular state, Hindus did not get rightful status of minority.

The court made it clear that if the petitioner sets a concrete example, Court will consider it, but it cannot declare Hindus as a minority in the states with their low population. Court will hear the matter in the first week of September along with the already filed application by Ashwini Upadhyay.

Petition states that Hindus have become a minority in 9 states, but still they cannot open educational institutions of their choice, while the Constitution gives this right to minorities.

The nine states where Hindus have been cited as a minority in the petition are Ladakh, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, Kashmir, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Punjab and Manipur. The petition states that Ladakh has 1 per cent, Mizoram 2.75 per cent, Lakshadweep 2.77 per cent, Kashmir 4 per cent, Nagaland 8.74 per cent, Meghalaya 11.52 per cent, Arunachal 29 per cent, Punjab 38.49 per cent and Manipur 41.29 per cent
