New Delhi, February 7, 2025 : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, has alleged large-scale irregularities in Maharashtra’s voter lists. Speaking at a joint press conference, they claimed that 39 lakh new voters were added between the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, a number equivalent to the population of Himachal Pradesh.
Gandhi expressed concerns over this sudden rise in voters, urging the Election Commission (EC) to disclose the complete voter lists and clarify the discrepancies. He alleged that the majority of these newly added voters favored the BJP, while opposition parties retained their previous vote shares.
“The adult population of Maharashtra, as per government data, stands at 9.54 crore, whereas the voter population has reached 9.7 crore. This discrepancy raises serious questions,” Gandhi asserted.
He further pointed out that while only 32 lakh voters were added over five years (2019-2024), 39 lakh were added in just five months after the Lok Sabha elections. “If the Election Commission refuses to release the voter lists, it indicates something is wrong,” he added.
Gandhi warned that the issue threatens the integrity of India’s democratic process, stating, “We are witnessing the systematic destruction of the Constitution, but we are committed to protecting it.” He indicated that if the EC fails to provide transparency, they will seek legal recourse through the judiciary.
“It is shocking that the EC is unwilling to release the lists. The only logical explanation is that they are hiding something,” he concluded.
The opposition leaders have vowed to continue their fight for electoral transparency and fair democratic processes In maharashtra.
