New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday regarding the teachers’ recruitment case in Uttar Pradesh. She accused the BJP of playing a “double game” with youth from both reserved and unreserved categories, alleging that the party is harming them socially, economically, and mentally.
Gandhi’s comments followed a Supreme Court decision that stayed an Allahabad High Court order, which had instructed the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a new selection list for the appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers. The Supreme Court also stayed the High Court’s decision that had invalidated the selection lists issued by state authorities in June 2020 and January 2022, which included 6,800 candidates.
“The BJP’s anti-youth and anti-social justice stance in the recruitment of 69,000 teachers in UP is shocking. By playing a double game, they are causing harm to youth from both reserved and unreserved categories, affecting them socially, economically, and mentally,” Gandhi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
She further criticized the BJP for allegedly perpetuating a reservation scam that deprived Dalit and backward candidates of their rights. Gandhi urged an end to what she described as ongoing injustices.
The Supreme Court’s decision also involved issuing notices to the state government and other parties, including the secretary of the UP Basic Education Board, based on a plea filed by Ravi Kumar Saxena and 51 others. The court has scheduled a final hearing for the matter in the week starting September 23 and asked the parties to submit brief written notes.
In August, the High Court had directed the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a fresh selection list for the 69,000 assistant teacher positions, following challenges to a previous single-judge order by Mahendra Pal and others.
