Premature Baby with CMV Infection Successfully Treated at Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar:  Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar has successfully treated a premature baby born at just 28 weeks and weighing less than 900 grams, who was diagnosed with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The newborn was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, prompting the medical team to conduct extensive evaluations.

Dr. Janaki Ballava Pradhan, Consultant in Pediatrics and Neonatology, and his dedicated team, including Dr. Abhilipsa Acharya, Consultant Neonatologist & Pediatrician, performed a series of comprehensive blood tests. Their efforts led to the diagnosis of congenital CMV infection, a rare yet serious condition that can adversely affect newborns.

Congenital CMV infection, transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy, can lead to severe complications, including liver failure, growth impairment, and even death. Early maternal screening is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Recognizing the urgency, Dr. Pradhan’s team promptly initiated appropriate antiviral treatment. Thanks to their swift intervention, the baby successfully overcame the infection and was discharged in good health.

The journey didn’t end there. Over the next two years, the medical team conducted regular follow-ups to monitor the child’s progress. Hospital sources reported that the child is now thriving, underscoring the life-saving impact of early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.

Dr. Pradhan emphasized the importance of prenatal screening in detecting potential health risks early. “Our ability to identify and treat congenital CMV infection in this baby was crucial in ensuring a positive outcome, and we are overjoyed to see the child flourishing today,” he stated.

Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar is equipped with advanced Level-3 NICU and PICU facilities, 24-hour emergency care, transport incubators, ventilators, and a Kangaroo Mother Care unit. The successful treatment of this newborn highlights the vital role of early diagnosis and intervention in neonatal care.
