New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the formation of a committee headed by a sitting or retired judge of the Supreme Court or High Court to investigate the nature of Shivling found in Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi.
The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court had dismissed the petition citing lack of jurisdiction to hear. Then, seven devotees of Lord Vishweshwar have moved the Supreme Court against this. In May 2022, a petition was filed in the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court seeking a direction to constitute a committee to ascertain whether the structure found inside the mosque was a Shivling. Hindu side claims that the structure found in Gyanvapi is a Shivling while Muslim side claimed it to be a fountain.
