Pankaj Kapur Expresses Desire for Comedic Role Discusses Directing and Writing

New Delhi, Sep 10: Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur has expressed a keen interest in taking on a comedic role, noting that it has been some time since he has ventured into lighter fare. Known for his performances in TV series like “Karamchand” and “Office Office,” as well as films such as “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro,” “Ek Doctor Ki Maut,” and “Maqbool,” Kapur mentioned that he often encounters scripts that he finds “crude.”

“I haven’t done comedy in a while and would love to explore it again,” Kapur told PTI. He reflected on how his early career was filled with comedic roles and how his recent work has skewed more towards serious characters. He attributed this shift partly to the nature of scripts he receives, which he feels lack the depth and subtlety he seeks. “Humour is something that makes me happy and I’d like to make people happy through it. However, I remain open to roles that are fresh, new, and substantial,” he added.

At 70, Kapur continues to be passionate about his craft, with acting being his “first love.” He is also interested in directing and writing. His directorial debut came in 2011 with “Mausam,” which starred his son Shahid Kapoor. He had earlier directed the TV show “Mohandas B.A.L.L.B.” in 1998, where he also played the lead role of a detective. Kapur ventured into writing with his debut novella “Dopehri,” published in 2019.

“Writing comes to me intuitively,” he said, mentioning that he has not yet had much of his writing work published, aside from his novella. Kapur also enjoys directing but finds the process of securing a producer challenging. “If someone could handle that aspect for me, I would be more than happy to direct a film,” he shared.

Kapur was recently seen in the Netflix series “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack” and will next appear in the film “Binny and Family,” featuring debutante Anjini Dhawan, granddaughter of veteran actor Anil Dhawan and niece of actor Varun Dhawan.
