The NEET UG 2025 exam will offer more than 1.2 lakh MBBS seats, marking a significant increase from last year’s 117,950 seats. This surge is attributed to the addition of new government and private medical colleges to the list of participating institutions.
Registration for NEET UG 2025 is expected to begin soon, with a projection of around 25 lakh candidates registering for the exam. This would surpass last year’s figure of 24,06,079 registrations. Over the last decade, the number of MBBS seats available through NEET has more than doubled, from 56,908 seats in 2015 to 117,950 in 2024.
Notably, over 20,000 MBBS seats have been added in the past two years alone, with an additional 11,650 seats expected in 2023. These developments are attributed to the Modi government’s efforts to establish medical institutions in every district across India.
While the expansion of MBBS seats is welcomed by aspiring students, many have raised concerns regarding the adequacy of facilities and infrastructure. The increase in seats could put a strain on existing resources and affect the quality of training and education provided.
