Bombay Tribune (Mumbai)The Iranian settlement in Kalyan’s western outskirts is notorious for harbouring criminals. Police have frequently attempted to apprehend the accused by conducting sweeps of the area. However, every time locals protest in the area, the police are forced to return empty-handed. Many types of activities, such as throwing stones at police, obstructing police, and assisting the accused in escaping, are common in this area. During a 2008 operation, police were forced to fire in the air in self-defense.
