New Delhi: Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court on Monday. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath in the presence of other Supreme Court judges. The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Supreme Court premises, was attended by several dignitaries and members of the judiciary.

With Justice Bagchi’s appointment, the Supreme Court now has 33 judges against the sanctioned strength of 34. He is set to retire on October 2, 2031, and before that, he is likely to assume the position of Chief Justice of India (CJI) in May 2031.

His elevation to the Supreme Court was recommended by the collegium led by CJI Khanna, along with Justices Bhushan R. Gavai, Surya Kant, Abhay S. Oka, and Vikram Nath, on March 6. The collegium considered several factors, including merit, integrity, judicial competence, regional representation, and seniority, before finalizing his appointment.

13 Years of Extensive Judicial Experience

Justice Bagchi brings 13 years of extensive experience across various branches of law as a High Court judge. He was first appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in June 2011. In January 2021, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court and later returned to the Calcutta High Court in November 2021.

The Central Government officially announced his appointment to the Supreme Court on March 10, following a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice’s Department of Justice.
