New Delhi: India’s coal production for the April-August 2024 period has reached 384.07 million tonnes (MT), marking a 6.36 percent increase from 361.11 MT during the same period last year, according to a statement from the Ministry of Coal.
Despite this positive growth, coal production in August 2024 saw a decline, falling to 62.67 MT from 67.76 MT in August 2023, reflecting a 7.51 percent drop. The Ministry attributed this decrease to above-normal precipitation, which affected mining operations and logistics.

The supply to the power sector increased to 338.75 MT, a 4.13 percent growth over 325.33 MT supplied during the same period last year. Yet, supply to the power sector in August 2024 was 58.07 MT, slightly down from 61.43 MT in August 2023, indicating a 5.47 percent decrease.
Coal stock levels at thermal power plants saw a significant rise, reaching 37.18 MT as of August 31, which is a 32.08 percent increase compared to 28.15 MT on the same date in 2023.
