Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is the top Indian institute in QS World University rankings

Akansha Saini, New Delhi: Forty one educational institutions from India have made it to the top 1,422 globally in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings-2023 of the world’s higher educational institutions and universities.

Seven of these institutes have found place in the list for the first time. Last year, only 35 institutes from India were included in the university rankings.

Union Education and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan congratulated Indian institutions for this achievement.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has got the best educational institute raking in the country. IISc is ranked 155th in the latest global rankings with an overall score of 49.5. Institute has jumped 31 places from last year and has secured the first position among Indian institutions.

It is followed by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and IIT Delhi in the top 200. IIT Bombay has gone up five places as compared to last year and is ranked 172nd with 46.7 score. IIT Delhi is ranked 174th with 46.5 score, has jumped 11 places.

All the selected Indian Institutes of Technology improved their position. Others in the top 300 include IIT Madras (250th), IIT Kanpur (264th) and IIT Kharagpur (270th). IIT Roorkee is at 369th rank while IIT Guwahati is at 384th and IIT Indore is at 396th position.

There has been a decline in the rankings of Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. DU has been is in the ranking range of 521-530 this year. Last year, DU was placed between 501-510. Anna University, Chennai is placed in the 551-560 ranking range. IIT Sangareddy has been placed in the 581-590 ranking. JNU has been placed in the 601-650 ranking category while last year it was in the 561-570 category.

IIT BHU Varanasi has been ranked 651-700 in the ranking. Jadavpur University, Kolkata is ranked in the ranking of 701-750. Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Mahe) and the University of Hyderabad are ranked 751-800.

Chandigarh University (801-1,000) is the youngest of the new entries, having been established less than ten years ago. Apart from this, IIT Bhubaneswar, Jamia Millia Islamia, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli, Pondicherry University, Shoolini University Solan, Kolkata University are included in the 801-1000 ranking.

Aligarh Muslim University, Amity University Noida, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Amritapuri, Banaras Hindu University, Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology Chennai, Siksha O Anusandhan University Bhubaneswar, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology Patiala, Mumbai University, Vellore Institute of Technology in the 1001-1200 ranking.

 

This year’s QS World University Rankings is the largest ever, with 1,418 institutions across a hundred places, up from last year’s 1,300. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked number one in the world for the 11th year in a row. University of Cambridge has moved up to second place, while Stanford University remains in third place.

 

Congratulating Indian institutions, union Education and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted, 41 Indian universities have featured in the QS World University Rankings 2023. My compliments to all the universities. Congratulate @iiscbangalore, @iitbombay and @iitdelhi for their academic excellence and for consistently being among the global league of top 200.

He added, Thrust on research, innovation and entrepreneurship, focus on inclusivity, multi-culturalism and internationalisation as envisioned in NEP 2020 will pave the way for a place of pride for more Indian universities in the global rankings
