New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that India is planning 360 ropeway and cable car projects valued at USD 7.93 billion. Speaking at an event on “Financing of Cutting-edge Products from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland” in New Delhi, Gadkari highlighted the immense potential of these projects and invited international companies for joint ventures.
Gadkari mentioned that, in addition to the ropeway and cable car projects, India is constructing over 300 tunnel projects. He encouraged firms from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria to collaborate with India on these infrastructure developments, emphasizing the need for affordable and innovative solutions to ensure economic viability.
“Indians have a lower per capita income and limited paying capacity, which is why it is essential to develop these projects at a reasonable cost,” Gadkari stated. He expressed optimism about the future of the sector, saying, “I am happy that we have a total of USD 7.93 billion worth of ropeway projects, but we need to ensure they are economically viable.”
During the event, Gadkari underscored the importance of using indigenous technologies and solutions, in line with the “Make in India” initiative, to standardize policies and promote local manufacturing of ropeway components. He urged industry leaders to focus on cost-efficiency without compromising safety or quality.
He concluded by highlighting the need for a balanced approach to infrastructure development, ensuring that economic growth is achieved while protecting the environment. “We have to develop the economy and protect ecology and the environment,” he said, pointing to India’s increasing use of innovative technologies in road construction and other infrastructure projects.
Gadkari’s remarks reflect India’s growing focus on sustainable and efficient transportation solutions, particularly in hilly and remote areas where ropeways and cable cars can offer significant benefits.
