In a significant stride towards bolstering the nation’s workforce, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has been actively engaged in delivering skill training under various schemes, notably the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). Under the overarching framework of the Skill India Mission (SIM), these initiatives aim to equip the youth with industry-relevant skills, fostering their employability and contributing to the country’s socio-economic development.
The PMKVY, launched in 2015, has been instrumental in providing Short Term Training (STT) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) opportunities to the youth. Building on the success of its predecessors, PMKVY 2.0 (2016-2020) witnessed training of over 1.10 Crore candidates, reflecting a concerted effort to empower the nation’s youth.
With a keen focus on adapting to evolving challenges and leveraging lessons learned, the Ministry launched PMKVY 3.0 in 2021. This phase introduced innovative programs such as the Customised Crash Course Programme for COVID Warriors (CCCP for CW) and the Skill Hub Initiative (SHI), aligning with the National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP, 2020). Notably, PMKVY 3.0 has trained 7.37 lakh candidates, including specialized training for COVID-19 response and integration of vocational education with general education.
Under PMKVY, emphasis has been placed on facilitating placement opportunities for certified candidates, thereby bridging the gap between skill acquisition and employment. Over the past five years, from 2018-19 to 2022-23, the scheme has enabled the placement of 481 candidates in the state of Goa alone, out of 2702 trained individuals.
Speaking on these initiatives, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar highlighted the government’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce, stating, “These initiatives are integral to realizing the vision of a future-ready India, where every individual has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth.”
As the PMKVY 4.0 is currently being rolled out nationwide, it underscores the government’s continued dedication to fostering skill development and empowering the youth to seize opportunities in a rapidly evolving economic landscape. With a renewed focus on innovation and inclusivity, these initiatives are poised to shape a brighter future for generations to come.
