ED Investigates Financial Irregularities at Kolkata’s R.G Kar Medical College

Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has uncovered questionable property acquisitions by Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and his wife Sangeeta Ghosh. The ED’s investigation into financial irregularities at the state-run medical institution has revealed significant findings.

On September 6, the ED carried out searches at seven locations, including the homes of Sandip Ghosh, his close relatives, and associates, in connection with the alleged misappropriation of funds at R.G Kar Medical College. This comes in the wake of recent attention following the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital last month.

During these searches, the ED seized incriminating documents, property records, and digital devices from Ghosh’s residence. It was discovered that Sangeeta Ghosh had acquired two properties without the necessary approvals.

The investigation is focused on assets disproportionate to the Ghoshes’ declared income, which includes two residential flats near R.G Kar, a flat in Murshidabad, and a luxurious farmhouse in South 24 Parganas. Many of these properties were purchased while Sandip Ghosh was the principal.

The ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are both examining the case. The CBI’s investigation is court-monitored, while the ED has initiated its own probe by filing an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR).

The ED has also identified several shell companies used to secure tenders and work orders for medical equipment and infrastructure maintenance during Ghosh’s tenure.

A Kolkata special court has remanded Sandip Ghosh, along with Afsar Ali, Suman Hazra, and Biplab Sinha, to judicial custody until September 23. Ali, Ghosh’s personal bodyguard, and Hazra and Sinha, vendors supplying medical equipment, are implicated in the financial scam.
