New Delhi: Addressing the Third Edition of the Summit for Democracy organized by South Korea in Seoul, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the monumental scale of India’s forthcoming 18th Lok Sabha elections, terming it as the most extensive electoral logistics operation in global history.
Delivering the National Statement virtually on behalf of the Indian government, Jaishankar underscored the theme “Democracy for Future Generations,” resonating not only within India but reverberating worldwide.
Highlighting the sheer magnitude of the electoral endeavor, Jaishankar stated, “With 968 million registered voters, 15 million election officials, and 1.2 million polling booths, the upcoming 18th edition of India’s national elections is the largest electoral logistics exercise that this planet has ever witnessed.”
Jaishankar emphasized the significance of a transparent democratic process, citing the adoption of electronic voting machines as a testament to India’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and the sanctity of democracy.
He noted that India’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and inclusive elections showcases the resilience and adaptability of its democratic machinery, ensuring that every citizen’s voice matters.
Jaishankar further emphasized inclusivity in the electoral process, especially in reaching remote areas and enabling participation among senior citizens and differently-abled individuals.
Recognizing the importance of youth voices, India has extended voting rights to individuals as young as 18, acknowledging their role in shaping the nation’s future.
Moreover, India’s strides towards gender equality in governance were highlighted, with Jaishankar noting the significant representation of women in elected positions and the recent decision to extend reservation for women in parliament and state legislatures.
Drawing from India’s rich historical legacy, Jaishankar emphasized the democratic principles ingrained in the country’s ancient civilization and enshrined in its constitution, which stands as a beacon of pluralism and inclusivity.
As India navigates the complexities of the modern world, Jaishankar emphasized the country’s commitment to democracy, rooted in its heritage and reflected in its technological advancements and efforts towards inclusive elections.
The Indian experience, Jaishankar noted, serves as a testament to the transformative power of democracy, evident in endeavors such as space exploration, financial inclusion, and global vaccine assistance amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
He concluded by urging responsible citizenship and international cooperation to uphold and pass on the torch of democracy to future generations.
The Summit for Democracy, initiated by US President Joe Biden, is hosted by South Korea this year, bringing together government officials, NGOs, and civil society members to discuss democratic principles and challenges.
