BEIJING: COVID- The severe “zero tolerance” attitude to the pandemic is gradually drawing complaints from citizens who are fed up with the restrictions. There are currently 19 cases in China’s largest city, Shanghai, with millions of people quarantined at home under a widespread lockdown.
On Sunday, health officials recorded 438 verified cases and 7,788 asymptomatic cases in the previous 24 hours. Both figures were slightly higher than the day before, while the northeastern province of Jilin reported a total of 4,455 cases on Sunday, up marginally from Saturday.
While the daily gains are tiny by some countries’ standards, they are among the most significant since the virus was initially discovered in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019.
Shanghai, which has a population of 26 million people, began a two-stage lockdown last week, with residents in the eastern Pudong part being able to leave their houses on Friday, while their neighbours in the western Puxi section were isolated for four days.
