Mumbai: In a significant move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unanimously agreed to extend Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team. Originally set to conclude after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Dravid’s extension comes after India’s commendable performance in recent tournaments.
Under Dravid’s initial leadership, India secured the top spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Team Rankings across all formats. Despite falling short in major ICC tournaments, Dravid aims to reshape the team’s destiny in his prolonged tenure.
During the extension announcement, Dravid expressed pride in the team’s resilience and highlighted the extraordinary journey over the last two years. India’s recent achievements include reaching the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022, the final of the World Test Championship, and finishing as runners-up in the Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Jay Shah, the Honorary Secretary of the BCCI, emphasized Dravid’s unmatched commitment to excellence. India’s formidable standing in all three formats reflects Dravid’s vision and guidance, according to Shah. The support staff, including Vikram Rathour, Paras Mhambrey, and T Dilip, also received extensions.
While the duration of the extension remains undisclosed, the team’s next major challenge is the tour of South Africa, featuring T20Is, ODIs, and Tests as part of the World Test Championship 2025 cycle. Dravid’s focus will also be on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024.
The announcement marks a pivotal moment for Indian cricket, with the BCCI expressing full confidence in Dravid’s ability to lead the team to sustained success on the international stage.
