Rampur: In a 2019 inflammatory speech case, the Special MP/MLA court in Rampur district found senior SP leader Azam Khan guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison on Thursday. Khan was found guilty in all three sections by the court. With this, Khan is likely to lose his membership in the house, since a 2013 Supreme Court decision states that if any MLA, MLC, or MP is convicted in a criminal case and sentenced to a minimum of two years in prison, he or she loses membership in the house.
Meanwhile, the judge granted him bail in the case. Khan was booked for violating sections 153A (promoting hostility between two groups), 505-1 (statement conducing to public harm), and 125 of the Representation of People Act 1951.
It’s a miracle I’m still alive: After stepping out of jail, Azam Khan surrendered before the court before the verdict was read. According to court authorities, the statements of 21 witnesses were recorded before the court. Five of them were produced by the defence counsel, while the prosecution produced four cameramen, the team leader of the video observation team, and others.
