Jaishankar Highlights Transformation in India-Australia Relations

Brisbane, Australia (November 3): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing the Indian diaspora at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, highlighted the remarkable evolution in India-Australia relations, attributing it to four key drivers: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australia’s proactive approach, shifting global dynamics, and the contributions of the Indian diaspora.

Reflecting on his fifth visit to Australia in the past three years, Jaishankar noted that a decade ago, Australia wouldn’t have ranked among India’s most crucial partners, emphasizing how dramatically that outlook has changed. He shared that in 2014, shortly after Modi assumed office, the Prime Minister posed a direct question about the then-untapped potential in India-Australia ties, prompting a reevaluation of the relationship.

Jaishankar underscored that the strengthening of ties was no accident but the result of deliberate leadership, ambition, and shared cultural bonds, including language and tradition, between the two countries. “This transformation didn’t happen on autopilot,” he stated, crediting efforts from both nations’ leaders and the valuable influence of the Indian diaspora.

During his five-day visit, from November 3 to 7, Jaishankar will inaugurate India’s fourth consulate in Australia, located in Brisbane. Reflecting on the significance of the visit, he posted on social media, “Namaste Australia! Landed in Brisbane today. Look forward to productive engagements over the next few days to take forward the India-Australia

Dosti.”
