Thimphu, Bhutan—The Kingdom of Bhutan International Film Festival (KBIFF) 2024 is set to make its debut from September 17-27, promising to establish Bhutan as a global hub for cinema and the arts.
The Bhutan Film Institute (BFI), a non-profit organization committed to fostering Bhutanese cinema and culture, is organizing the event. KBIFF aims to celebrate the art of filmmaking, highlight Bhutan’s unique cultural heritage, and position the country as a significant destination for filmmakers and cinephiles worldwide.
Masterclasses Lead the Way
The lead-up to the festival has featured a series of masterclasses by renowned professionals, including wildlife photographer Roie Galitz and Indian composer Shantanu Moitra.
Galitz shared his expertise on wildlife photography, focusing on lighting, weather, and behavioral patterns—key elements for capturing Bhutan’s pristine landscapes and diverse fauna. “Photography is a powerful medium that inspires and connects people to nature, particularly in a country like Bhutan,” he said.
Shantanu Moitra, celebrated for his compositions in Bollywood hits like Parineeta and PK, will lead a music masterclass. Additionally, Christian Jeune, Director of the Film Department at Festival de Cannes, is set to offer insights into global filmmaking trends and festival dynamics.
Bhutan’s Unique Appeal
Galitz expressed his admiration for Bhutan’s conservation efforts and cultural preservation. “Visiting Bhutan is like traveling back in time,” he remarked, emphasizing the country’s immense potential as a destination for filmmakers and photographers.
A representative from the BFI echoed this sentiment, lauding Galitz’s alignment with Bhutan’s environmental values. “His work resonates deeply with our commitment to preserving the natural world,” the representative said.
