The central government has announced plans to build a memorial for former President Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi, four years after his passing. The memorial will be located at the National Smriti Complex, which is dedicated to national leaders. Mukherjee, who served as President from 2012 to 2017, passed away on August 31, 2020.

Mukherjee’s daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, expressed her gratitude for the initiative after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She shared her appreciation on social media, stating that her father always believed that national honors should never be demanded but should come naturally. While Pranab Mukherjee himself would not be affected by the honor, she expressed immense happiness for the recognition.
The National Smriti Complex, situated near the Yamuna River, serves as the final resting place for prominent leaders such as Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers. The initiative to build this memorial comes as part of an effort to honor India’s national leaders in a designated location.
In related news, controversy arose recently over the final rites of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Congress criticized the government for not providing adequate recognition for Singh’s memorial, raising questions about the respect given to his legacy. However, the government has clarified that a memorial will be established for Singh at a suitable location, with land allocation under progress.
