New Delhi, September 10, 2024 – India’s coal production and supply from April to August 2024 have demonstrated a positive trend, with total coal production reaching 384.07 million tonnes (MT), marking a 6.36% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite challenges from above-normal rainfall in August, which impacted mining operations, the Ministry of Coal has remained committed to meeting the country’s energy needs.
In August 2024, coal production slightly decreased to 62.67 MT, down from 67.76 MT in August 2023. However, coal supply from April to August 2024 rose to 412.69 MT, a 5.17% increase year-on-year, despite a slight dip in August when supply fell to 69.94 MT, compared to 75.19 MT the previous year.
Supply to the power sector, a key focus area, grew by 4.13% in the same period, reaching 338.75 MT. In August 2024, supply to the power sector was 58.07 MT, slightly lower than August 2023’s 61.43 MT.
Coal stock at thermal power plants also saw a significant 32.08% increase, standing at 37.18 MT by the end of August 2024.
These figures highlight the resilience and strategic focus of the Ministry of Coal, ensuring stable production and supply to meet India’s growing energy demands.
