Washington: President Joe Biden declared the killing of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar a “good day for Israel and for the world.” This confirmation came as Israel announced that Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks last year, had been eliminated in a mission supported by American intelligence.
Biden emphasized that Israel has “every right” to eliminate terrorists, stating that Sinwar’s death illustrates that no terrorist can escape justice, no matter the duration. He compared this moment to the U.S. operation that resulted in Osama Bin Laden’s death in 2011, suggesting it brings a sense of relief and hope for a better future.
The president noted that Sinwar was a significant barrier to peace, and his removal creates an opportunity for a “day after” in Gaza without Hamas in power. He condemned the October 7 attacks, which led to the deaths of over 1,200 individuals, including 46 Americans, calling it the “deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.”
Biden highlighted that he had directed Special Operations and intelligence personnel to collaborate closely with Israeli forces to locate and track Sinwar and other Hamas leaders hiding in Gaza. He confirmed plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on this critical accomplishment. The elimination of Sinwar has been a top priority for Israel since the horrific October 7 attack last year.
