Farooq Abdullah Expresses Hope for Swift Restoration of Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar:  National Conference President Farooq Abdullah voiced optimism on Thursday regarding the central government’s potential restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to the media in Srinagar, Abdullah noted that discussions about statehood have gained momentum, particularly following the Supreme Court’s indication to prioritize a related application.

An application has been submitted to the Supreme Court, urging the Centre to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood within a two-month timeframe. Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan presented this matter to Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, emphasizing the need for a time-bound implementation.

“I am hopeful that the Government of India will restore the statehood to Jammu and Kashmir very soon,” Abdullah stated. While he acknowledged that the restoration of Article 370 may take longer, he emphasized the urgent need to address unemployment and poverty in the region.

Abdullah reaffirmed his party’s commitment to its manifesto, aiming to lead Jammu and Kashmir towards peace and prosperity. When questioned about Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s directive to avoid creating traffic disruptions during his travel, Farooq responded that “running of sirens will not be allowed now,” underscoring the importance of prioritizing public convenience. He also mentioned that traffic regulations, including checks on two-wheeler riders without helmets, will be enforced.
