Mumbai, India – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Metro Line 3, enhancing urban transportation. This line connects the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey and marks Mumbai’s first underground metro line. The project cost approximately Rs 14,120 crore and includes nine underground stations. Once operational, it will serve around 12 lakh passengers daily.

Alleviating Traffic Congestion

The Mumbai Metro Line 3 is part of the Colaba-SEEPZ corridor. Its main goal is to ease the city’s traffic congestion and lower pollution levels from rising vehicle numbers. Additionally, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded the project to improve commuting efficiency. For example, the journey from the Domestic Airport station to Cuffe Parade will take only 45 minutes. This is a significant reduction from the over two hours needed by car during peak hours.

Inclusive and Secure Design

The metro line will feature women-only cars and priority seating for those in need. It will also increase security with surveillance cameras. Furthermore, the station designs will include features for the elderly and disabled, ensuring a comfortable experience for all passengers.

Future Developments

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that phase II of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 will begin in March. Moreover, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project, estimated at Rs 12,200 crore. This 29 km project will have 20 elevated and two underground stations, addressing Thane’s transportation needs as a key industrial hub.

The Thane Municipal Corporation plans to contribute over Rs 5,000 crore to the project, which should finish by 2029. Projections suggest daily ridership will rise to 8.72 lakh passengers by 2045.

Enhancing Regional Connectivity

In addition to the metro projects, PM Modi laid the foundation for the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension and Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) project. These initiatives will improve connectivity in the region. The new Thane Municipal Corporation building, valued at Rs 700 crore, aims to centralize municipal services for residents.

Conclusion

In summary, these projects represent a significant investment in Mumbai’s infrastructure. They aim to create a more efficient and eco-friendly urban transit system for the city’s residents.
